Cat Facts

By Katie

It doesn’t matter if you’re a cat lover or not, you have to respect that cats are truly so interesting. Here are some cat facts which might actually surprise you!

Any cat owner will probably know that cats go through their toys quickly or get bored of them just as quickly. Cutting expenses and making your little kitties their own toys will add a bit of creativity and love to very common cat toys. Here are some ideas for a few DIY cat toys.

Two Cats
One up a tree
One under the tree
The cat up a tree is he
The cat under the tree is she
The tree is witch elm, just incidentally.
He takes no notice of she, she takes no notice of he.
He stares at the woolly clouds passing, she stares at the tree.
There’s been a lot written about cats, by Old Possum, Yeats and Company
But not Alfred de Musset or Lord Tennyson or Poe or anybody
Wrote about one cat under, and one cat up, a tree.
God knows why this should be left for me
Except I like cats as cats be
Especially one cat up
And one cat under
A witch elm
Tree.

Ewart Milne (1903-1987)

This is a really beautiful poem which perfectly states the simplicity of life and cats. The poem not only cleverly rhymes but the shape of the lines create a half diamond shape, which is the why the poem is sometimes referred to as the diamond cut diamond.  The whole poem basically says how poets have talked complexly about cats and their symbols but none have really talked about them in their peaceful nature.

What do you think this poem symbolises?

It’s International Cat Day, and whilst the hashtag is going crazy and people are sharing all their wonderful cat stories all over the world, we thought we would showcase some of the most famous felines, celebrating the public’s love for cats and their stories into how they made it into the celebrity life.

McGibblets is a short hair, beautiful, adult male cat, his story begins when he was being fed voluntarily whilst he had no home at all. For over two years McGibblets was being fed by Mary who spent the first six months feeding and warming him up so that McGibblets would finally allow her to pick him up and cuddle with him.

Although McGibblets wasn’t allowed in the house, Mary selflessly set up a shelter for him in a camper just outside their property, humorously, it wasn’t enough for the gorgeous cat. He had experienced love and care from Mary and now wanted more, and the once timid and lonely cat took to crying at Mary’s door and begging her for more attention.

From first glance, McGibblets has this adorable chubby head, and beautiful short hair – instantly making people fall in love with him as soon as they come into contact with his gentle nature.

Unfortunately, McGibblets wasn’t the picture of health when he was taken to a shelter, he had to be treated for fleas and amenia which was brought on by a blood parasite caused by his fleas. He also sadly has a painful condition called pododermatitis or ‘Pillow Foot’, for which McGibblets was given a treatment of steroids, antibiotics and a paw soak every single day. Fortunately, the treatment not only helped his poor little, swollen paws but it also made his red blood cell percentage normal. McGibblets also ran into a nasty respiratory virus which was luckily already being fought by all the heavy medication he as on, and so it was minimalised almost instantly.

Despite all his problems and apparent set-backs McGibblets never complained or reacted badly. He was always accepting of the treatment and appreciated all the kindness and compassion he was shown throughout. His positive and happy attitude meant he grew stronger and healthier every single day. Not only that but he also grew fonder and more comfortable around new people and he began thanking people with lap sits and cuddles.

There is not one volunteer at Big Sid’s Sanctuary (where he is currently) who can resist cuddling up with McGibblets, especially when he comes up to them and crawls into their arms; he really does melt everybody hearts. He is the definition of a gentle giant who also enjoys the company of other cats which is a quality a lot of people look for in a cat.

Despite everything McGibblets has been through, he continues to spread happiness and joy to everybody’s life. He brings an important message to anybody who meets him – no matter the trials and tribulations life throws at you, people will always be there to help you and you should always spread happiness and be optimistic. The loving kindness of Mary and the volunteers are the reason McGibblets is looking forward to a more comfortable life and he is still looking for a new home. You can find more about him and a little bit more about his current condition here. Help spread the word about this amazing and super friendly cat who would make a great addition to any home.

It has been reported that the Cabinet Office is set to adopt one lucky cat in an attempt to stop the mouse problem they have, it was also stated (lightheartedly) that the name of the cat would most likely be Cromwell. Cromwell the cat will have the serious responsibility of catching the mice for the Cabinet Office – becoming the fourth cat of Westminster.

Although it is yet to be confirmed it would be an adorable addition to the cats already appointed by Westminster such as Gladstone the cat and Larry the cat , Cromwell will gain the title of Chief Mouser for the Cabinet Office. The other Chief Mousers have done a great job at controlling the mouse problem.

On another note, there has been recent media attention involving Larry and Palmerston who have unfortunately been fighting a terrible amount since David Cameron’s resignation. They have been having brutal fights and Larry was even seen to have a chunk of fur missing and needed to be seen by the vet for a sore paw.

Apparently, the fighting is a result of the changing environments unsettling them as changing a cat’s routine or scenery can cause them to feel the need to reassert their territories which can obviously mean fighting other cats – especially new cats. Larry and Palmerston could also be fighting for attention from their owners and the new faces which will be wandering around their home. At one point police even had to step in and stop the fighting cats.

Fortunately, as every cat owner will probably have noticed. Cats usually form some kind of truce and decide to stay away from each other after a few weeks, so Larry and Palmerston should stop the conflict soon and keep their boundaries. If you’re having similar fighting troubles with your cats , placing a cat bed on top of a wardrobe or somewhere else far away/ high up can help prevent more damage and fighting between the cats. The good news is that the Downing Street Cat War will soon be ending.

Both of the two cats were adopted from Battersea Dog and Cats home. Larry was given his lavish new home in 2011 and Palmerston was adopted earlier this year which would explain why the two cats are still not familiar with each other. Cats become stressed when forced to interact with unknown cats.

So far Gladstone is the Treasury Office’s Chief Mouser, Larry is Number 10’s Chief Mouser, Palmerstone is the Foreign Office’s Chief Mouser and Cromwell will possibly be the Cabinet Office’s Chief Mouser if he is hired. Of course, these very serious positions come with a lot of responsibility and paid heavily in kitty treats.

There has also been worry that Number 11’s Philip Hammond will be moving his Welsh Terrier, Rex, into the house. Welsh Terriers have been known to chase cats (and any other prey), but there shouldn’t be too much worry, as we’ve seen Larry and Palmerston can certainly put up a fight and the valued kitties can always count on the public and their owners to protect them.

Cat Quote

By Katie

“Owners of dogs will have noticed that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they will think you are God. Whereas owners of cats are compelled to realise that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they draw the conclusion that they are gods.”
Christopher Hitchens, The Portable Atheist: Essential Readings for the Nonbeliever

This funny quote touches on what every single cat owner experiences. Cats will always walk around like they are the Queen or King of the house, just remember whatever it may seem, your pet cat really does appreciate and love you.

This social media famous adorable rescue cat with no claws, just three teeth, a crooked ear and hip dysplasia has captured the hearts of thousands of people all around the world and now wants to use his amazing moustache and cute little characteristics to make a difference.

He was adopted by his owners as a companion for their other beloved cat Princess Mer after they became convinced he needed a friend, however they had no idea how much of an impact the amazing little cat would make. They immediately fell in love with him and knew they just needed to take him home with them.

The strange but beautiful looking cat has an extraordinary but tragic back story – he has witnessed a murder. Kyle was actually being held as evidence by the police for a domestic violence incident which sadly ended fatally. Kyle wasn’t the only kitty who was held by the police, 30 other cats who were also in the house which the murder took place were taken as part of the murder investigation.

When Kyle’s pictures and posts began to gain a lot of attention of social media platforms such as Instagram and Reddit, his owners decided to use his voice and followers to gain attention to domestic violence causes.  Kyle’s owners noticed that there was a dire need for animal-friendly domestic violence shelters which would allow victims to take their beloved pets to safety too.

Research has suggested that abusers who also abuse their pets are more dangerous and controlling than those who do not and 45% of abused women have delayed leaving their abuser or returned to them for their pets safety. Chilling facts like these emphasise the need for these shelters which Kyle the kitty is raising awareness about.

In February 2015 Kyle started the hashtag phenomenon #CatsAgainstDV which means Cats Against Domestic Violence, the hashtag spread the word and outlined the need for animal-friendly domestic violence shelters, amazingly Kyle and his popular photos have already raised over $4000 for organisations which support the cause.

Kyle also promotes and raises money for various different charities and his Charitable Cash 4 Kyle’s Stache donates money to his causes and many different charities and campaigns which are all making a large difference for those who need it most. He sells little Kyle cat plushie teddies, mugs and pillows just to name a few, all with his beautiful signature looks and adorable face.

Kyle has started a new campaign which involves his adorable plushies which can be bought from his store. People purchase a plushie and they must share it with a family who has been impacted by domestic violence. You can buy one of the adorable cuddly toys and Kyle will ship it directly to Urban Resource Institute which is the only organisation which provides safety shelters for everybody including pets .

Despite Kyle’s upsetting and tragically unfair past, he has continually helped and raised awareness and money for causes which mean a lot to him and his owners. His owners have done an incredible and selfless act of kindness to help prevent situations like Kyle’s and to also help victims feel more comfortable to escape violent circumstances. From a rescue cat to rescuing more pets.

Because I’m only human,
It’s sometimes hard to be
The wise, all-knowing creature
That my cat expects of me.

And so I pray for special help
To somehow understand
The subtle implications
Of each proud meowed command.

Oh, let me not forget that chairs
Were put on earth to shred;
And what I like to call a lap
Is actually a bed.

I know it’s really lots to ask
But please, oh please, take pity;
And though I’m only human,
Make me worthy of my kitty!

This sweet poem, humorously explains every cat owner’s wish to be the best they possibly can be, whilst sharing the experiences everybody who owns or owned a cat has dealt with – shredded chairs and laps being used as beds.
